The Gulf of Maine Habitat Mapping Project used occurrence information and species/habitat
models to map potential habitat for 63 species of primary concern to the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service. These include migratory birds, anadromous and estuarine fishes, and threatened or
endangered species. The habitat models are based on published literature, agency reports, and
knowledge of experts working with the species.

We downloaded databases of counts by year by bird species at each of 50 stops along routes
throughout study area, for the years 1997, 1998; data for 1990 donated by Raymond Oconnor,
Univ. of Maine, Orono. We digitized routes and joined these to the database files. The coverage was
used to test the association of the mapped habitats with harrier occurrences.

Process_Description:
Habitat was mapped by selecting appropriate land/wetland cover types, then adjusting the scores
for area suitability and distance from development. We eliminated patches smaller than 10 ha in
area, and reduced habitat value by half for sites that were within 90 m of development.
