The Gulf of Maine Habitat Mapping Project used occurrence information and species/habitat
models to map potential habitat for 63 species of primary concern to the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service. These include migratory birds, anadromous and estuarine fishes, and threatened or
endangered species. The habitat models are based on published literature, agency reports, and
knowledge of experts working with the species.

Source_Contribution: Ecologically homogeneous areas; used in conjunction with occurrence information,
to identify polygons within which the species may be expected to occur; habitat within the
polygons then is further delimited using parameters such as land cover.

Process_Description:
The black tern range within the study area was delineated by selecting the USDA Forest Service
Ecological subunits (Keys et al. 1995) in which the terns were known to nest, and extending this
west to include the New Hampshire BBA blocks. Habitat mapping was restricted to these areas.
Habitats were mapped according to cover type (table, below), area of wetland complex, and
information on use. Because black terns show strong fidelity to certain Maine wetlands, these
areas were scored highest. Other wetlands of suitable composition, having an area of 20 ha or
more and within the used Ecological subunits were scored as shown in the table, indicating our
relative confidence that they may be of use to the birds. See also black_tern_model.htm
