Fish ladders and lifts have opened up more than 1,000 miles of migratory fish habitat in the Connecticut River watershed! Here is some information about the dams where fish are counted. The Leesville Dam is on the Salmon River in Connecticut. It is monitored only for Atlantic salmon. The Salmon River joins the Connecticut River 18 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The Rainbow Dam is the first dam on the Farmington River in Connecticut, located 8 miles upstream of the Farmington River/Connecticut River confluence. The Farmington River joins the Connecticut River 57 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The DSI Dam (Design Specialties International) is the first dam on the Westfield River, Massachusetts, located 4 miles upstream of the Westfield River/Connectictut River confluence. The Westfield River joins the Connecticut River 75 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The Holyoke Dam is the first dam on the mainstem of the Connecticut River. The Holyoke Dam is located in Massachusetts, 87 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The Turners Falls Dam fish
ladder is not monitored continually, so counts are incomplete. It is
located in Massachusetts, 122 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The Vernon Dam fish ladder is located in Vermont, 142 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The Bellows Falls Dam fish ladder is located in Vermont, 174 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound.
The Wilder Dam fish ladder is located in Vermont, 217 miles upstream of the Long Island Sound. This facility is not monitored, so fish using this ladder are not recorded in reports.
Notes:
Occasionally, Atlantic salmon are counted at places other than fish passage facilities, and recorded under Additional Atlantic Salmon.
Total counts to the river include all migratory fish counted at all dams downstream of and including the Holyoke Dam.
