The North Attleboro National Fish Hatchery supports Atlantic salmon restoration programs in southern New England. The Connecticut and Merrimack rivers salmon programs transfer sea-run adults after spawning (kelts) to the North Attleboro NFH for reconditioning every fall. This process involves training the salmon to feed so these fish will continue to spawn and make contributions to fry production. Typically, female kelts produce about two million eggs that are incubated at this and other hatcheries for fry stocking programs. The hatchery also incubates sea-run and domestic broodstock eggs for the Merrimack River (NH/MA), Pawcatuck River (RI), and New Hampshire coastal rivers restoration programs.
