1.1 Who will perform the Director's duties if the Director is not available? Unless otherwise directed by the President and to ensure continuity of supervision, the Deputy Director will act as Director when the Director, because of an emergency or unexpected contingency, is not available to perform her or his duties.

1.2 Who will perform the Director's duties if neither the Director nor Deputy Director is available? When the Director or Deputy Director is not available to perform the duties of Director, the following officials will act as Director in the order of succession indicated:

A. Assistant Director - External Affairs

B. Assistant Director - Administration

C. Assistant Director - Planning and Budget

D. Regional Director - Region 6

1.3 What are our authorities for authorizing officials to act as Director?

A. 302 DM 1.

B. 5 U.S.C 3346 and 3348.

1.4 Does the automatic succession list always apply? No. The designations for automatic succession provide formal assurance of continuing supervision in unexpected contingencies. Temporary designations may supersede any automatic succession for short periods of time. 302 DM 1.7 provides procedures for temporary provisions.

1.5 Do we have a communications center for use during emergencies? During any emergency that precludes direction of our activities and operations from the Washington Office, the Regional Director, Region 6, will serve as liaison between the Director and other Regions. The Regional Director, Region 6, will consult with the Director on all matters for which there is no established Service policy.

1.6 Have Regional Directors designated persons to act for them in emergencies? Regional Directors will prepare an automatic succession list to include at least five positions below the Deputy Regional Director. Forward a copy of this list to the Assistant Director - Administration.
