Respirator Selection and Use

If your job task(s) expose you to:

Then we recommend the following type of respirator:

Animal-borne disease (e.g., Hantavirus, Herpes B, Anthrax, Q-fever, Plague, Psittacosis, Tuberculosis, Histoplasmosis)

                    or

Rodent droppings (Hantavirus, when cleaning areas where there are likely to be a lot of droppings).

* Not including Avian Influenza.

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirators with N or P100 filters or

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirators with N or P100 filters or

·   Full-face, powered air-purifying respirators with HEPA or P100 filters.

Asbestos

(During building inspections and Level 1 and 2 Site Survey assessments when asbestos is either know or suspected)

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirator with N100 or P100 filters or

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirator with N100 or P100  filters or

·   Full-face, powered air-purifying respirator with HEPA or N or P100 filters.

Epoxy- or Oil-Based Paints

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirators with organic vapor filters and pre-filter or

·    Full-face powered air-purifying respirator with organic vapor filters.

Formaldehyde

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirator with organic vapor or specific formaldehyde cartridges or

·    Full-face, powered air-purifying respirator with organic vapor or specific formaldehyde cartridges

Incidental Lead-Based Paint Disturbance

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirators with N100 or P100  filters or

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirators with N100 or P100  filters or

·   Full-face, powered air-purifying respirators with HEPA or N100 or P100 filters.

Pesticides, Herbicides, and Rodenticides

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirator with combination particulate and pesticide cartridges or 

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirator with combination particulate and pesticide cartridges or

·   Full-face, powered air-purifying respirator with combination particulate and pesticide cartridges.

Welding

·   Half-face, N95 (or greater) disposable dust/fume air-purifying respirators or

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirators with N/P/R 95 (or greater) combination filters or

·   Full-face, powered air-purifying respirators with N/P/R 95 (or greater) combination filters.

Avian Influenza Surveillance Activities (respirator use is based on a risk assessment). Refer to the FWS National Avian Influenza Response Plan.

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirators with N95 or higher  filters or

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirators with N95 or higher filters.

Natural and Man-made Disaster Response and Recovery

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirators with combination OV and acid gas cartridge and N100 or P100  pre-filters or

·   Full-face, air-purifying respirators with combination OV and acid gas cartridge and N100 or P100 pre-filters.

Minor Mold Clean-Up (Less than 10 square feet)

·   Half-face, air-purifying respirators with combination OV and N95 pre-filter.

Note: We require respirators when work environments contain exposures that are greater then OSHA’s applicable Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) or the American Conference of Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs).
