Parts of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Closed Due to Flooding
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge Manager Howard Phillips announced today that they will not be canceling the scheduled refuge hunts; however, all unimproved roads on the refuge, including Allen, Boerma, Countyline, and the cut across from DeHoog to the south end of Boerma, will be closed due flooding. "The roads with rock will remain open, but the other roads are really impassable until they dry out. Allowing them to be used under present conditions would create serious maintenance issues for us; plus, visitors would spend more time getting unstuck than hunting," Phillips explained.
On the Pungo Unit, the two-day permitted hunt will proceed, as scheduled. "Since the unit is closed to other visitors during this hunt, we don't anticipate problems for those few folks driving out there. But, some of the roads in the Pungo Unit are flooded and will not be drivable," Phillips added.
