EcoFest at the Environmental Learning Center
By Reck Niebuhr, Co-Chairman
Anticipating the Pelican Island Centennial, the Environmental Learning Center decided to add a historical dimension to ECOFEST 2003. In addition to its usual array of hands-on crafts and games, ECOFEST 2003 featured BENCHMARK ALLEY, a pictorial and experiential journey through the past century.
Since today's youngsters have little understanding of what life was like WITHOUT electricity, running water, air-conditioning, cars, telephones, radio, television and the computer BENCHMARK ALLEY presented them with pictures of life along the Indian River beginning in 1900 and moving to the present.
Demonstrations of spinning, quilting and other crafts along with artifacts of earlier times completed the journey through time for the 3000 children and adults who attended ELC's ECOFEST 2003
