Keahou
and Maui Bird Conservation Centers
The Keahou (Big Island) and Maui Bird Conservation Centers were established
in 1993 and 1996, respectively, and are funded by government, nonprofit,
and commercial agencies, as well as individual donors. The Centers are
managed by The Peregrine Fund, a nonprofit organization devoted to studying
and the captive breeding of rare and endangered birds.
The program propagates `alala and other species of endangered Hawaiian
forest birds such as the puaiohi, Hawaii `akepa, Hawaii creeper, palila,
Maui parrotbill, `akohekohe, nene, and the non-endangered Hawaii `elepaio.
1,500 Hawaiian students visit the program each year to learn more about
conservation in Hawaii.
