The Big Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex consists of the Hakalau Forest NWR, and Kona Forest Unit. This complex has more than 38,000 acres of protected rainforest and includes some of Hawai`i's "rarest of the rare" species. These refuges are tasked with protecting unique species that exist nowhere else in the world, some numbering fewer than 20 individuals.
