What We Do
It’s important to understand that wildfires are a natural occurrence and are essential to maintaining healthy forests and grasslands. |
| The natural fire regimes on public lands, however, have been disrupted by decades of working to suppress nearly every fire that ignited. |
Today, we use prescribed treatments, such as controlled burns, to reduce fuel loads. |
| This not only lessens the intensity and severity should a wildfire occur, but also returns nutrients to soil, stimulates new vegetative growth, and improves habitat for many birds and animals. |
