What We Do

Prescribed burn   It’s important to understand that wildfires are a natural occurrence and are essential to maintaining healthy forests and grasslands.
The natural fire regimes on public lands, however, have been disrupted by decades of working to suppress nearly every fire that ignited.   Night-time operations
Reducing fuel load with a prescribed burn   Today, we use prescribed treatments, such as controlled burns, to reduce fuel loads.
This not only lessens the intensity and severity should a wildfire occur, but also returns nutrients to soil, stimulates new vegetative growth, and improves habitat for many birds and animals.   Protection Island NWR wildlife
