DIRECTIONS

About 65 miles south and east of Elko, or 90 miles north and west of Ely. Some roads are inaccessible in winter. Write for map.

PRIMARY WILDLIFE

  • An important nesting area for redheads and canvasbacks.
  • A nesting colony of 200 pairs of white-faced ibis.
  • Trumpeter swans, Canada geese, ducks, sandhill cranes, shorebirds, and sage grouse.
  • Fish include largemouth black bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout.


HABITAT


37,632 acres of marsh, meadow, and sagebrush habitat. It lies in a closed drainage basin along the eastern flank of the rugged and scenic Ruby Mountains.

  • Non-motorized or electric-powered boats allowed from June 15 - July 31; power boats under 10 horsepower allowed from August 1 - December 31.Two boat launching areas in the South Marsh are connected by over 6 miles of marked canoeing and boating channels.

SPECIAL NOTES

  • State fish hatchery located in refuge
  • Forest Service campground located adjacent to the refuge 2 miles south of headquarters
  • Large and small game hunting available on lands adjacent to and near the refuge
  • Office hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
