DIRECTIONS to Open Trail Days

Take Interstate 5 south from Sacramento approximately 20 miles to the Elk Grove exit. Turn right at the stop sign after exiting and meet at the gate for open trail days and guided tours. The trail is open every second and fourth Saturday of each month (closed July and August).

PRIMARY WILDLIFE

  • Migratory waterbirds
    Colonial-nesting double-crested cormorants, great-blue herons and great egrets
    Warm water fishery
    Endangered, threatened and special-status species: valley elderberry longhorn beetle, giant garter snake, vernal pool tadpole and fairy shrimps, Sacramento splittail, western pond turtle, American peregrine falcon

    HABITAT

    Over 4,000 acres of both seasonal and permanent wetlands, riparian forest, and grasslands, as well as some of the last remaining fresh water lakes in the Central Valley., attracting a wide variety of wildlife.

RECREATION AND EDUCATION

Public access is limited to every second and fourth Saturday per monthand special events. Special tours may be arranged in advance during the week for education groups. Please contact refuge office for additional information or call the information line at (916) 774-4420.
