Land Protection Planning
Study
Purpose
of Land Protection Planning Study:
The purpose
of the study is to determine the feasibility of: acquiring and managing
high quality habitats as part of the James Campbell Refuge; conserving
the native wildlife species that occur there; and participating in the
Kahuku Watershed Project.
Current
Status:
Planning Update 1 was distributed at the end of April 2004,
describing the study and requesting comments from the public. Planning
Update 2 was distributed the first week of March 2005, it included a brief
summary of the public scoping comments we received, a map of the study
area, and an update on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers watershed project.
A more comprehensive summary of scoping is available in the Scoping Report.
All of these documents are posted below.
On May 25, 2006, legislation
passed establishing an approved Refuge boundary that adds approximately
750 acres to the Refuge linking the Refuge's two units--the Ki'i Unit
and Punamano Unit separated by nearly a mile--into a single unit of protected
wildlife habitat totaling approximately 1,100 acres. Planning Update 3
provides further explanation.
