Migratory Bird Permits

Recognizing the value of migratory birds for recreation, through hunting, and for scientific, educational, and other valid purposes and acknowledging damage that can be done by large populations of certain bird species, the Department of Interior by regulation and permit, has provided for controlled take and other use of certain species, in specific areas at specified times.  If you have questions regarding Migratory Bird Permits in the Pacific Region and CNO, contact us at: fw1_birdpermits@fws.gov
Under the authority of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the regional migratory bird permit office issues a variety of migratory bird permits, including authorizing possession of species, live, non-releasable and dead specimens
for public wildlife conservation; possession of bald eagle feathers by Native Americans for religious use; captive-breeding of native waterfowl; rehabilitation of injured/orphaned birds and depredation permits when financial loss or health concerns are documented.
Currently, the Pacific Region and CNO have 7,500 active permits under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the permit types listed below.
