Celebrating the 22nd Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

"Too often people [falsely] equate disability or limited mobility with inability" - Dolores Noyes, ADA Program Manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. July 19, 2012

A new accessible fishing ramp and platform at Drano Lake provides enhanced fishing opportunities for wheelchair-bound anglers, the elderly and other people with disabilities. Conceptualized nearly five years ago, the Service provided financial support and worked with federal, tribal, state agency and local partners to turn vision into reality. The Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant ramp and fishing platform were dedicated July 19, 2012, at Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery in Cook, Washington.

The project is the result of years of work by many people, led by Speros Doulos, manager of the Columbia River Gorge National Fish Hatchery Complex, Rory Calhoun, Recreation Accessibility Specialist for Washington State's Recreation and Conservation Office, and Dana Perez, Chief of the the Service's Pacific Region Division of Diversity and Civil Rights. Doulos, Calhoun, and Perez, anglers themselves, wanted to ensure that people with disabilities have access to one of the most productive salmon and steelhead fishing areas in the Pacific Northwest. The platform will encourage people of all ages to get outdoors and rediscover adventures in their own backyard.

A number of representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, the local community, and others, gathered to witness the official opening of the paved Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA)-compliant pathway and fishing platform. The Yakama Nation and U.S. Forest Service also provided valuable support to the Service and State of Washington on the project.
