Lower
Snake River Compensation Program: The Lower
Snake River Fish and Wildlife Compensation Plan (LSRCP) was
authorized by the Water Resources Development Act of 1976
to compensate for fish and wildlife resource losses in Oregon,
Washington, and Idaho caused by the construction and operation
of the four lower Snake River hydroelectric dams and navigation
lock projects. A hatchery program was authorized and constructed
as part of this program to rear salmon, steelhead, and resident
trout to compensate for fewer adult fish returns to the Snake
River basin and the associated loss of fishing opportunities.
The Fish and Wildlife Service's LSRCP Office in Boise, Idaho
administers the production program and funds the operation
of 26 hatchery, research, and fish health facilities using
monies generated by the Bonneville Power Administration's
sale of hydroelectric power. The program is operated, monitored,
and evaluated cooperatively by the Oregon, Washington, and
Idaho state fisheries agencies; the Nez Perce Tribe; the
Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation; the
Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall, Idaho; and the Fish
and Wildlife Service. |
