REIMBURSABLE INCOME

The Service is reimbursed by other Federal agencies, private parties, Tribes, and conservation organizations to produce, rear, and distribute salmonids.  Mitigation of salmonid populations for operation of the hydro-power system and other human activities is the largest portion of our work.  The Service produces and rears 38.4 million salmonids annually to compensate for lost habitat.  It is estimated that the economic benefit to the Pacific Northwest due to salmonids produced at National Fish Hatcheries is over $200 million.  In addition, the Service is also reimbursed for its technical and professional expertise for research of applied technology, compliance with the Endangered Species Act and other environmental regulations, and aquatic species evaluation.  Below is a table illustrating the funding change from FY 2000 to FY 2005 followed by some narrative highlights.
