CONSTRUCTION

Hatchery and Facilities Construction Projects - The Construction account supports the building and repairing of Service facilities.  Projects are prioritized based upon health and human safety needs and other mission critical needs.  Most recently, the Fisheries Resource Program received funding to modify buildings to comply with building safety codes.  The Fisheries Resource Program has also received emergency supplemental funding to repair its facilities during extreme flooding and earthquake events.  Construction funds are project specific and do not remain a part of the operational budget.  The FY 2007 requests $500 thousand to replace Nada Dam, as it has been identified as a High Hazard that has the potential to cause considerable harm to humans and property in the event of dam failure.

Fish Restoration Irrigation and Mitigation Act - State, local, and tribal governments, as well as individual water diversion operators, propose projects that meet the eligibility and local cost-share requirements of this program. These are then ranked based on fish restoration benefits, cost effectiveness, and feasibility criteria. Once selected, screening and passage projects are then installed or improved by working with our state, tribal, and local partners. Project sponsors assume responsibility for project operation and maintenance. This program is carefully coordinated with complementary state screening programs and existing programs for habitat improvements within the Columbia Basin and adjacent areas of the Pacific Northwest.

Between 2002 and 2004, the following accomplishments were achieved in the FRIMA program by the Pacific Region:

  • Completed 38 of 60 projects
  • Protected, enhanced, or made accessible more than 452 miles of streams important to fish;
  • Installed 53 fish screens (with 27 more in construction);
  • Completed 9 fish passage and screening inventories (with others currently being conducted); and
  • Addressed 5 fish passage barriers.
