Forest Grove Student Wins the Oregon 2001 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competition

Stephanie Bishop, Grove, won Best of 15, a home schooled student from Forest Show in Oregon for the Art Contest. Her pastel on 2001 Federal Junior Duck Stamp suede rendition of a drake mallard, entitled "Ruffled Feathers", has been sent to Washington, Dof Oregon in the 2001 National Federal .C. to represent the state Junior Duck Stamp contest to be held April 25, 2001.

Stephanie has been the recipient of other art awards including three ribbons from the 2000 Washington County Fair. Stephanie's inspiration for her art comes from viewing many different photographs and paintings. Her art instructor is Roberta St. Louis of Forest Grove. Stephanie is in an accelerated education program and is currently taking courses at Portland Community College.

The 1st place winner of the National competition will have his or her artwork portrayed on the Junior Duck Stamp and will be awarded a $2,500 cash scholarship. If Stephanie's entry places in the top three, she will win a free trip to Washington, D.C. along with her art instructor and a family member to attend the adult Federal Duck Stamp contest.

A five-judge panel selected Stephanie's entry from 335 entries received from 16 counties throughout Oregon. The judging was held on April 3rd, at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Regional Office in Portland. The judge's for this year's competition were Charlie Quinn with The Nature Conservancy; Tom Dwyer of Ducks Unlimited; Grant McOmie an Outdoor Reporter with KATU-2; Matt How with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Norris Petersen a wildlife artist and sculpture from the Portland area. The Junior Duck Stamp coordinator for the Oregon competition is Pam Johnson, Administrative Support Assistant for the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Newport. The Pacific Northwest office of Ducks Unlimited was a co-sponsor of this event.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program is a nationwide competition, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which integrates art and science in a curriculum that fosters student awareness and appreciation of waterfowl and wetlands through artistic talent. Public, private, and home schooled students from kindergarten through twelfth grade are encouraged to compete in this unique conservation through the arts program.
