ORVET DRAFT ACTIVITY GUIDANCE
RESOURCE PRIORITY #2
MIGRATORY BIRDS
October 2002
RESOURCE PRIORITY #2
In cooperation with partners, reverse the decline and achieve stable, viable populations of migratory landbirds and other bird species of concern.1
Action Strategy A: Obtain information on the distribution, abundance, trends, and habitat associations of migratory landbirds and other bird species of concern occurring in the ORVE, and consolidate this information into systems (reports, databases, or GIS) useful to resource managers.
Action Strategy B: Using information obtained in "Action Strategy A" and other information, conduct analyses of existing and potential threats to migratory landbirds and other bird species of concern in the ORVE
Action Strategy C: Protect, restore, and enhance habitat to stabilize declining populations and achieve viable populations of migratory landbirds and other bird species of concern whose breeding range occupies a significant portion of the ORVE.
Action Strategy D: Disseminate educational and outreach information in cooperation with Partners in Flight and using other delivery mechanisms.
Action Strategy E: Work within the FWS and with Partners in Flight to monitor and influence the situation of migratory landbirds and other bird species of concern where they winter outside the ORVE.
FY2001-2002 Draft Activity Guidance
The Ohio River Valley Ecosystem Team (ORVET) Migratory Bird Subgroup (MBS) will implement projects in FY 2000/2001 that continue to address the Action Strategies under Resource Priority #2 listed above. In FY 2002 the MBS will:
1) Implement the second year of the Bewick's wren study
2) Implement a 2-year study on Cerulean warbler nest productivity.
3) Work with PIF, NAWMP, and others to coordinate various bird conservation efforts underway within these organizations for the ORVE
4) Work with bird conservation organizations, academia, and agencies to identify key migratory bird research needs for the ORVE
5) Continue using the Migratory Bird Subgroup GIS to identify and refine important areas of forest, shrub land, and grassland within the ORVE
6) Employ the Migratory Bird Subgroup GIS to conduct initial investigation of bottomland hardwood forest and riparian habitat within the ORVE
In FY 2002 the MBS will:
1) Implement the second year of the Bewick's wren study
2) Implement a 2-year study on Cerulean warbler nest productivity.
3) Work with PIF, NAWMP, NABCI, and others to coordinate various bird conservation efforts underway within these organizations for the ORVE
4) Continue evaluation of bottomland hardwood forest and riparian resources in the ORVE with the Migratory Bird Subgroup GIS
5) Work with bird conservation organizations, academia, and agencies to identify key migratory bird research needs for the ORVE
6) Work to implement a coordinated bird conservation strategy in the ORVE with a focus on bottomland hardwood forest, riparian, grassland and other important habitats within the ecosystem
7) Identify criteria for on-the-ground projects that contribute to the Action Strategies and Activity Guidance of the Migratory Bird Subgroup and work toward implementation of those projects to conserve the migratory bird resources within the ORVE (International Migratory Bird day zoo project).
In FY 2003 the MBS will:
1) Work with PIF, NAWMP, NABCI, and others to coordinate various bird conservation efforts underway within these organizations for the ORVE
2) Continue evaluation of bottomland hardwood forest and riparian resources in the ORVE
3) Work with bird conservation organizations, academia, and agencies to identify key migratory bird research needs for the ORVE
4) Work to implement a coordinated bird conservation strategy in the ORVE with a focus on bottomland hardwood forest, riparian, grassland and other important habitats within the ecosystem
5) Identify criteria for on-the-ground projects that contribute to the Action Strategies and Activity Guidance of the Migratory Bird Subgroup and work toward implementation of those projects to conserve the migratory bird resources within the ORVE
