The Ohio River Valley ecosystem drains a total area of approximately 141,000 square miles and includes portions of 10 states.  The Ohio River, which is the backbone of this ecosystem, is formed by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers and flows 981 miles in a southwesterly direction to its confluence with the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois.
