A Little about Portland, Oregon
Also known as the City of Roses, Portland is populated by friendly
people and surrounded by the beauty of tall trees, snow-capped
mountains, and numerous rivers. Portland is a city that takes pride
in its many green spaces, parks, and bountiful flower gardens.
The climate is temperate, though rainy in the winter.
In the heart of the Pacific Northwest, Portland is nestled between
the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Coast Range to the west,
at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The metropolitan
area has a population of approximately 1.5 million.
Less than 80 miles west of Portland is the Pacific Ocean. With
326 miles of public ocean beaches, the Oregon coast is a major
year-round destination with attractions such as kite festivals
and sand castle building contests, unique shops, migrating whales,
and abundant shorebirds and sea birds.
A half an hour east of Portland is the Columbia River Gorge National
Scenic Area with access to river beaches, waterfalls, extensive
hiking trails, and stunning viewpoints. The Gorge is also a world-renowned
windsurfing area. Mt. Hood offers year-round skiing, hiking, camping,
and fishing within an hour drive of Portland. The diversity of
habitats on both sides of the Cascade range makes for a wealth
of birding and other wildlife viewing opportunities.
