Waterfowl Hunt 2013

Washita National Wildlife Refuge Waterfowl Hunt Dates Set

Washita National Wildlife Refuge, located west of Butler, Oklahoma on the upper end of Foss Reservoir, will host limited public hunting for geese and sandhill cranes during the 2013-2014 season. This public hunt has been offered on the refuge since 1982 and is one of the premier public waterfowl hunts in the state.

Two hundred twenty three hunters bagged 271 geese during the refuge hunts last season, an average of 1.2 geese per hunters – and over double the success rate from the previous year! “Washita NWR continues to be a prime goose-hunting destination, and offers some of the most economical hunting in the state. And with a peak population near 100,000 most years, true waterfowlers are sure to get a thrill whether or not they take home their limit.” said Refuge Manager Amber Zimmerman.

Ten blinds situated on the edges of wheat fields will be available for each scheduled hunt day. Hunting will be by permit only. Non-transferable permits for seven weekend (2 day) hunts will be selected by a random drawing. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Successful applicants may bring up to two companions. Participants must be in possession of all required State and Federal licenses, stamps, and permits. Special assistance can be provided, and an accessible blind is available for hunters with mobility impairments. All hunters are required to use federally approved non-toxic shot. No more than twenty five (25) shells per hunter are allowed. Bag limits are in accordance with those set by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Shooting hours will be ½ hour before sunrise until 11:30 a.m. All hunters must remain in their blind until 11:30 a.m.

The application period will be from September 3rd through September 30th, 2013. Applications must contain the following information: Name, mailing address, telephone number, and ONE preferred hunt weekend. Incomplete applications will be disallowed. Any person submitting more than one application will be disqualified. Applications can be mailed, faxed, e-mailed, delivered in person, or submitted via telephone. Mailed applications must be postmarked and faxes, e-mails, and phone calls must be received by September 30, 2013. Successful applicants will be notified via postal mail by October 11, 2013. A $20.00 blind fee for the two-day weekend hunt is required to be paid by successful applicants by October 25, 2013.
