Upcoming Events:
May 19 – Fishing Derby
Our 10th annual fishing derby will be held at our two fishing ponds stocked with catfish. Their grassy banks make fishing safe and easy. Children ages four through fifteen must pre-register to participate, or may register the morning of the derby, if our limit has not been met. There are two types of registration:$10 with a rod & reel provided or $5 without. Prizes will be awarded in two age categories for the largest fish and the heaviest stringer of fish. Each registered child will receive a goodie-bag and a door-prize ticket. Follow the signs to the ponds.
June 2 – Canoeing
Canoes, life jackets and paddles will be available to take out on Bluff Lake at no charge. This is a great opportunity to explore canoeing, the rookery and the cypress stands. Canoes will be launched at Doyle Arm near the new boardwalk. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
June 16 – Ladies Bait Your Hook – 9-noon
Ladies of all ages who want to learn about and get involved in fishing will enjoy this informal session on the various types of freshwater fishing. The types of fish you can catch, fishing methods and the various tools of the trade will be shown and demonstrated. After the in-class session, the class will go outdoors to a fishing pond. Participants will be able to bait their own hook and try their luck at catching some catfish. Bring your own fishing pole or we will have one for you to use. Registration is required.
July 21 - Fly-tying on the Refuge
Interested in fly-fishing and lure-construction? Join us for a morning of fly-tying basics with local fly-fisherman and -tyer, Ray Iglay. We will cover essential techniques for tying multiple types of flies and explore some common fly patterns for brim, bass, and catfish. Fly-tying materials will be provided and participants can keep all of their flies from the morning. However, participants are welcome to bring their own supplies as well. The session will also review creating new patterns to match. 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Visitor Center.
Ray Iglay has over 10 years of experience including freshwater and saltwater fly patterns. For the past 3 years, he has assisted with Mississippi State University’s Wildlife and Fisheries Intergenerational Summer Camps introducing youth and their parents to tying their own flies.
