2011 Career Discovery Internship Program
My name is Matt Ouano. I was born and raised in Casper, Wyoming. I feel lucky to have grown up in a place where outdoor activities are a way of life. I enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and just plain being out in nature. I just graduated from Casper College with an Associates degree in both Wildlife Management and Biology. In August I will continue my education in Wildlife Biology at Humboldt State University in northern California. I was very interested when I heard about the Career Discovery Internship Program. It was hard trying to narrow down the list of locations to my five favorites. There were only 62 positions offered nationwide, so I was extremely excited when I found out I had been chosen for one. Currently I am in Ellsworth, Maine performing an internship with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Green Lake National Fish Hatchery. My duties include everything from cleaning pools to sample counting fish to collecting fish from streams. It is very rewarding to know that my hard work is helping to bring back the numbers of the endangered Atlantic salmon. This internship is exposing me to many aspects of what the USFWS does, from actual science and field work to the paper work end of the job. This is the perfect opportunity to get my foot in the door and make appropriate contacts to start my career in nature conservation. I realize how much work went into making the CDIP program actually happen, and I want to thank all of those who worked so tirelessly to provide this opportunity to us.
