Melissa LeshHello! My name is Melissa Lesh and I am currently a student at Virginia Commonwealth University, double majoring in Environmental Science and Painting & Printmaking. Since my birth, 19 years ago in Panvel, India, I have been caring for animals, painting and sculpting, creating music, and active in sports and a classical style of Indian dance. I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, in a family of artists, with a deep appreciation for the forests, marshes and rivers I spent much of my childhood exploring. I moved to Vienna, Virginia, for high school, where I graduated a year early in order to volunteer at various wildlife refuges across India. Given a glimpse of how critical wildlife rehabilitation and habitat conservation is, my future goals and choice of work was clear. I now hope to complete the necessary steps through education and hands-on experience that I will need in order to become part of the large-scale effort in not only improving the current state of our planet, but also spreading awareness to all those with open ears. I love photography and film, which I have been incorporating into my conservation work. As I see it, you can’t recreate nature, but you can capture it and share it with the world. Currently, SCA is giving me an opportunity here at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge to combine my two passions, which I hope will be just the first stepping stone of a long journey toward global awareness, sustainability and human/wildlife coexistence.
