Current Activities in the Northeast - 2011 through 2012

Maine – updated NWI data for Moosehorn and Sunhaze National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs).

New Hampshire – updating NWI data for Great Bay and Pondicherry NWRs.

Connecticut – in the process of completing statewide update of NWI funded by Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection including NWIPlus data, recent trends analysis, statewide landscape-level wetland functional assessment, and an inventory of potential wetland restoration sites – report planned for Fall of 2012; planning an eelgrass inventory for the eastern end of Long Island Sound for the summer of 2012 (report scheduled for FY2013); updated NWI data for McKinney NWR.

Massachusetts – completed report on wetland status and functions for Cape Cod and the Islands (see list below); updated and enhanced NWI data for central and western Massachusetts: added hydrogeomorphic-type descriptors (LLWW descriptors for landscape position, landform, water flow path, and waterbody type) to the geospatial data; updated NWI data for Monomoy and Parker River NWRs.

Rhode Island – performing a rapid update (major changes only) of NWI data and plan to produce report on wetland status and functions for the entire state by end of 2012.

New York – completed report on updated NWI for Long Island (see list below); working on other reports addressing recent trends, historic trends from early 1900s, island-wide wetland functional assessment, and inventory of potential wetland restoration sites; completing historic trends assessment for the greater Buffalo area - report scheduled for late 2012; conducting an inventory of unmapped areas of the Lake Ontario watershed along with updates in selected areas – part of a multi-year effort to improve wetland data (funded by EPA through the Great Lakes wetlands restoration initiative).

New Jersey – applying rapid updating techniques to make recent NWI updates more current and creating NWIPlus database by finalizing LLWW classification for the state's wetlands, will then use data to generate a statewide landscape-level wetland functional assessment, and publish report on the state's wetlands by Fall of 2012; updating NWI data for Forsythe, Supwana Meadows, and Cape May NWRs.

Delaware – completed statewide update of NWI and produced interagency-cooperative state report (including current status, recent trends analysis, and statewide landscape-level wetland functional assessment – see link to report below); other reports planned (e.g., an inventory of potential wetland restoration sites).

Maryland – updating and enhancing NWI data for much of Maryland's coastal zone; updating NWI data for the Blackwater and Eastern Neck NWRs.

Pennsylvania – updating NWI data for Erie/French Creek NWRs; plan to update and enhance NWI data for the Lake Erie watershed of Pennsylvania (funded by Pennsylvania Coastal Resources Management Program) – expected completion in 2013.

Virginia – updating and enhancing NWI data along the mainstem of the James River; updating NWI data for the following NWRs: Back Bay, Chincoteague, James River, Presquille, and Wallops Island.

West Virginia – updating NWI data for Canaan Valley NWR.
