2009 Spring & Fall Wild Turkey Instructions and Information

The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge will continue its turkey hunting program.

  • If you receive an Area #5 permit from the State for any of the spring turkey hunting periods, you can obtain a permit from the refuge for those same hunting periods. Remember, you must have both State and refuge permits to hunt on the refuge.

  • Your refuge permit application must be accompanied by a $20 check or money order, made payable to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Please note, there are some exceptions to the $20 fee: youth hunters (children under 16) are not charged a fee and Senior Passholders and Access Passholders are only charged a $10 application fee. We cannot accept cash, and permit applications that are not properly completed will be returned.
  • You can obtain a refuge hunt permit at anytime. However, you must receive a NJ Area #5 turkey permit and have it in your possession on the refuge.

  • The refuge will be open again this year for fall turkey hunting. Once you get the refuge permit, you will see it is good for both spring and fall, provided you have the appropriate State Area #5 permit for the hunting periods you choose to hunt. However, if you choose not to obtain a refuge turkey permit in the spring, but want to hunt the fall season, you will need a obtain a refuge permit for fall turkey after you have received your State permit. The permit application fees indicated above will be charged.

We encourage hunters to print the hunt information and the 2009 wild turkey application form from our website. This greatly reduces our workload. You may also pick up the permit application in person. We accept completed applications by mail or in person. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
