Information for Hunters with Disabling Conditions
The Wallkill River National Wildlife
Refuge issues "Special Hunting Permits" for eligible physically
challenged persons to provide hunting opportunities for people who need physical
or mechanical assistance for mobility, during the prescribed seasons set by
the refuge.
To qualify for a Wallkill River
NWR Special Hunt Permit, hunters must present the following:
State of New Jersey Permit
To Shoot or Hunt From a Stationary Vehicle
Information on how to obtain a State of New Jersey Permit and application
can be found at www.njfishandwildlife.com or by writing NJ Fish & Wildlife, PO Box 400, Trenton, NJ 08625-0400.
Upon evidence of the NJ Permit
To Shoot or Hunt From A Stationary Vehicle, hunters may then be issued
a Wallkill River NWR Special Hunt Permit. With both permits and applicable
zone 2 deer permits, the hunter has the opportunity to hunt the "Access
for Disabled Hunters Only" property located at 119 Owens Station Road.
This is the ONLY property in which properly licensed persons may shoot or
hunt from a stationary vehicle.
In addition to all Federal, State
and Refuge hunting regulations, the following regulations apply:
- Hunters with disabling conditions
are encouraged to bring one non-hunting partner. The non-hunting partner
is also required to carry a special refuge permit (free).
- Only the disabled hunter is
allowed to possess a firearm or bow.
- The non-hunting partner must
be within close proximity to the disabled hunter for assistance and for
the purpose of game retrieval.
- The non-hunting partner may
not participate in the hunt by "driving" animals to the disabled
hunter.
Hunters with disabling conditions
are welcome to hunt the remaining open areas of the refuge, but no special
accommodations are available and the use of ATV's are prohibited. Hunters
must park in designated Hunt Parking Areas.
An Important Message
Our wildlife is a valuable resource. Laws and regulations are intended to
protect them, while allowing for some consumptive use. Hunters are encouraged
to report any violations they may encounter to a State or Federal employee.
The future of hunting on the refuge requires responsible hunter behavior and
compliance with regulations.
Thank you. Have a safe and enjoyable
hunting experience.
