SKYWATCH

Refuge Headquarters

Skylands Astronomy Club will set up their telescopes outside the refuge headquarters to guide viewers through a panorama of the night sky. Saturn, starts, nebulae, and galaxies will be highlighted. Bring a chair, dress for the evening temperatures and enjoy an evening with the stars.
  

 
 

MOMMY AND ME PRESCHOOL WALK

“How Mom Raises Me” Spring has sprung!  Everywhere you look there are signs of new life in baby plants and animals.  Join us for this Mommy and Me walk to explore the various ways that Wildlife Mothers raise their young.  Best suited for ages 3 – 5.

VENUS TRANSIT ACROSS THE SUN

Don't miss this last opportunity to see an astronomical event that will not be seen again until 2117. Skylands Astronomy Club will return to set up a solar telescope for viewing the planet Venus as it passes in front of the Sun.  They will set up scopes with special filters that will allow viewing of solar prominences, filaments, and sunspots.

There is a lot to find on the trail, but it may not be obvious, at first.  Learn the secrets of exploring nature and increase your skills of observation to discover the wildlife all around.

HIDE AND SEEK ON THE WILD SIDE

 Let’s find out how things hide.  Animals are the best at Hide and Seek.  Using natural camouflage they can make themselves look like part of a tree, hide behind blades of grass, or vanish in the shadows.  Can you?  See how they do it!

DISABLED VETERANS FISHING AND BAR-B-QUE

Loaner poles and bait available. Prizes too!
Handicap accommodations.

Come enjoy a day at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge in Vernon; fishing in a large pond normally closed to the public. Fantastic fishing! Catch and release only.

Fun for the whole family and free too!  Bring your fishing gear and lawn chairs and enjoy the day fishing in a location that is only open for this special event.  Catch and release.

Come for a leisurely walk to explore the many tasty and healthful plants that grow wild.  Jessica Lawlor and Adam Hamer will guide the group, pointing out the bounty of summer plants that can be enjoyed in a meal or used as a treatment for an ailment.
