Project Reviews in Virginia
Step 6b - Eagle Concentration Areas
(B) Determine if the action area intersects within a designated bald eagle concentration area by using the Virginia Field Office's Bald Eagle Map Tool (Note: accessing this online ArcGIS tool may take a few minutes). Shorelines designated as concentration areas (both winter and summer) were mapped with a 660 foot buffer.
(NOTE: For projects that have blasting or other loud noise components, the buffer distance around eagle nests and concentration areas is 2,640 feet or up to 5,280 feet in open areas. Refer to the National Bald Eagle Management Guidelines.)
- If the action area does not intersect with an eagle concentration area, add "bald eagle" to the species/resource name column and add "does not intersect with an eagle concentration area" to the conclusion column in the species conclusion table. Continue to Step 7
- If the action area intersects with an eagle concentration area, add "bald eagle" to the species/resource name column and add "does intersect with eagle concentration area" to the conclusion column in the species conclusions table. Using the mapper, you will also be able to determine the time of year restrictions for the shoreline area. Continue to Step 7
