BTAG biologist at the L.A. Clarke Superfund Site

Environmental Contaminant biologists in Virginia participate in the multi-agency Biological Technical Assistance Group (BTAG) via an Interagency Agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Philadelphia, PA (EPA Region 3).

The EPA Region 3 BTAG is comprised of environmental scientists and wildlife biologists from Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and EPA.  The BTAG provides EPA project managers with technical expertise on the investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites to protect fish and wildlife.  Once cleanup is complete, many of these sites are restored to valuable wildlife habitat, including wetlands, forests, and grasslands.

EC biologists principally consult with EPA on National Priority List (NPL or Superfund) sites.  BTAG biologists work cooperatively with EPA Remedial Project Managers through all phases of NPL site activities, including Preliminary Site Investigations, Remedial Investigations, Ecological Risk Assessments, Feasibility Studies, Remedial Design and Implementation.   EC biologists in the Virginia Field Office work on sites in Virginia only.  There are currently 20 active NPL sites in Virginia and are listed here:
