NOTICE: The final inspection for the restoration project has been completed and the refuge is now open. Wildlife observation is permitted on a limited basis from the observation area (click here for map). This area will eventually become the new parking lot. Observation will be permitted from this area only until a trail system is created which we expect to be done in the summer of 2012. We ask you to please refrain from walking beyond this point since the area has been reseeded and the vegetation is not yet established. Updates will be posted here on this web site and in the kiosk at the refuge.

Welcome to the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge Home Page. The refuge is one of over 540 units in the National Wildlife Refuge System, which is part of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. At the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, we conserve the biological diversity of the Wallkill Valley by protecting and managing land, with a special emphasis on grassland birds, wintering raptors, and endangered species, while providing opportunities for scientific research and compatible public use.
