“The Role of the F&W National Forensic Lab in Wildlife Prosecutions”
Edgard Espinoza, Ph.D., Deputy Director, National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Laboratory
Description: The National Fish and Wildlife Forensic Lab is responsible to assist the Office of Law Enforcement of the Fish and Wildlife Service in prosecuting violators of federal Fish and Wildlife laws. The Lab receives evidence from both F&W Special Agents, F&W Port Inspectors and F&W Refuge Officers, who in the process of investigating wildlife violations encounter evidence that needs to be analyzed.
The Lab has a Veterinary Pathology unit that determines cause of death of submitted carcasses. For determining the species source of animals remains (ex. blood, feathers, jewelry, etc.) the Lab has genetics, morphology and chemistry capabilities. For determining individual identity (who did the crime and/or for linking victim, crime scene and suspect) the lab has
latent prints, firearms and DNA capabilities. The Lab also had a digital evidence unit that analyses computers, cell phones, GPS units and cameras that have been seized as part of wildlife investigations.
