Conservation Partnerships
With the establishment of the refuge in 1996, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was authorized to protect up to 20,000 acres along a 55-mile stretch of the Rappahannock River. Purchases and donations of land will include both fee title and conservation easements. The Service policy on land acquisition is to purchase land from willing sellers, primarily using funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund. The refuge works with partners including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, The Conservation Fund, The Nature Conservancy, The Trust for Public Land, and Virginia Outdoors Foundation to protect habitat and secure funding from other sources including grants.
For the current status of refuge land protection, see the Refuge Ownership Map.
