Events at the Refuge

Fishing Derby - To celebrate wildlife dependent recreation, the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a youth fly fishing event with the Kittery Trading Post during a 9:00 – 11:00 event.  Please contact refuge for June dates.  Children 8 to 15 years of age will be taught how to fly fish by Kittery Trading Post instructor Chris Henson.  Children and onlookers will learn about fly fishing, tackle and casting techniques.  Refuge staff will speak about refuge fishing opportunities, conservation, and the importance of angler ethics.  After the program, children and accompanying adults are welcomed to try their luck with their own tackle.  Fly fishing instruction is by reservation only. Sign up by calling the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge at 646-9226.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  There is a maximum of 15 spaces available for the event. Fishing is one of the System's priority public uses.  Many national wildlife refuges, including Rachel Carson Refuge, provide great opportunities for fishing. Contact the refuge for a leaflet describing the areas that are open for saltwater fishing.

100th Anniversary of the birth of Rachel Carson – May 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rachel Carson. The refuge is hosting a free centennial celebration at the headquarters in Wells, Maine on June 9, 2007. For more information, please call (207) 646-9226. The refuge is developing additional on site activities and participating with other entities named for Rachel Carson to raise awareness of her work for current generations. For more information please visit the Rachel Carson Homestead website.

Junior Duck Stamp Event – The Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is a dynamic, active, art and science program designed to teach wetlands habitat and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school. Students from around the United States submit drawings to their state. Winners from these competitions, called the "Best of Show," are then submitted to the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest. One image from the 53 Best of Show entries will become the next Junior Duck Stamp. Proceeds from the sale of Junior Duck Stamps are returned to states for environmental and conservation education programs.
