Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge Comprehensive Conservation Planning

Draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan Available

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is pleased to announce the release of the Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge Draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan and Environmental Assessment (Draft CCP/EA).  The draft plan is now available for public review and comment (Nantucket Draft CCP).

The CCP is a 15-year plan designed to provide strategic management direction that best achieves the Refuge's purposes; attains the vision and goals developed for the Refuge; contributes to the National Wildlife Refuge System mission; addresses key challenges, issues and relevant mandates; and, is consistent with sound principles of fish and wildlife management.

A printed copy of the draft plan, or a copy on compact disc (CD-Rom), can be requested by contacting Carl Melberg, Refuge Planner, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, c/o Eastern Massachusetts NWR Complex, Weir Hill Road, Sudbury, MA 01776, by telephone at (978) 443-2898 ext 32, or through email at northeastplanning@fws.gov. Please note "Nantucket NWR CCP" in the email subject line.

The Service is now scheduling public meetings to be held during the comment period.  The meeting locations, dates, and times will be posted on this Web site and released to the media, as soon as final arrangements are made.

The meetings will provide an overview of the proposed plan for the refuge, and provide the public with the opportunity to submit oral comments. However, attendance at these meetings is not required in order to submit comments.  Comments received via regular mail, email, or fax  are also encouraged. Public input is critical to shaping the final plan and its implementation.  The deadline for submitting comments is October 1, 2011.

The Refuge planning team will review comments gathered during the public comment period before developing a final plan. Involving the local community, our partners, and other stakeholders throughout the planning process is vital to the ultimate success of the plan. If you are interested in helping us plan this refuge's future, we encourage you to participate.
