Special Designated Areas

What is the Service planning policy concerning special designation areas?
As part of comprehensive conservation planning, we will review any existing special designation areas such as wilderness, research natural areas, wild and scenic rivers, wetlands of international importance (Ramsar sites), Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserves, etc., and address the potential for any new special designations.

Concurrent with the CCP process we will conduct a wilderness review and incorporate a summary of that review into the CCP. We will complete the inventory phase of the wilderness review during preplanning. If you identify a wilderness study area, we will proceed with the study and recommendation phases of the review.

Special designation areas are also known as Special Management Areas.
