Chincoteague NWR Alternative Transportation Study

News and Updates

A public outreach event will be held on Monday, July 27, 2009 from 6am-2pm by the corral along Beach Road, where the ponies will be held after the Beach Walk Monday morning. The event will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn about transportation issues and solutions for the refuge, seashore, town, and county. Volpe Center staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Documents with information from the public meetings held on October 16th, 2008 and January 17, 2009 are now available under Project Documents.

Another public meeting was held on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in an attempt to obtain input from additional residents, including part-time residents.

Two initial public meetings will be held on October 16, in partnership with the Town of Chincoteague and the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, so that interested parties have a chance to communicate directly with the study team as the project gets underway. (Two meetings are being organized at different times on the same day so as to best accommodate people's different schedules; the format of the meetings and the information provided by the study team will be the same.)

Thursday, October 16
9-11 am or 6-8 pm
The Chincoteague Center, 6155 Community Dr., Chincoteague Island, VA 23336

For more information about the meetings, contact Lou Hinds, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge Manager, at Louis_Hinds@fws.org or 757-336-6122 x332.

If you are unable to attend, you may send comments to chincoteagueplanning@dot.gov. All documents from the meetings will be posted on this website under Project Documents.
