Chincoteague NWR Alternative Transportation Study

Alternative Transportation Planning

A public outreach event will be held on Monday, July 27, 2009 from 6am-2pm by the corral along Beach Road, where the ponies will be held after the Beach Walk Monday morning. The event will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn about transportation issues and solutions for the refuge, seashore, town, and county. Volpe Center staff will be on hand to answer questions.

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Assateague Island National Seashore, Town of Chincoteague, and Accomack County are working with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center on an alternative transportation study. The study, which is estimated to take about one year to complete, aims to objectively analyze different ways to address transportation problems -- including beach access, traffic, and parking. The research study will be informed by ideas and comments from the public, as well as analysis of data and information about traffic, transportation, and other factors. This website provides information about the study’s schedule, compiled documents and data, and any updates throughout the study’s duration. Comments for this study can be sent at any time to chincoteagueplanning@dot.gov.

Documents with information from the public meetings held on October 16th, 2008 and January 17, 2009 are now available under Project Documents.
