National Wildlife Visitor Center Update by Refuge Manager, Brad Knudsen:
"This is just to let everyone know that the National Wildlife Visitor Center may not be open again until this fall. This is not necessarily bad news. The reason for the extended closure is because we received additional funding which is enabling more progress in making badly needed repairs to the heating/ventilation system. These renovations are also allowing us to install more energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, so we are becoming a greener building. There are still unfunded needs, however, and if additional funding is received later in the fiscal year, the closure may extend for an even longer period of time. We ask for everyone’s patience and understanding through this uncertain time.
Weekend public tram tours on the Visitor Center grounds will begin the first weekend in April, despite the building being closed. Tram tours may also be scheduled on weekdays by reservation. A variety of other programs are scheduled for the public several times a month on both the Visitor Center grounds and at the Refuge’s North Tract entrance off of MD Route 198.
Patuxent’s Public Earth Day celebration will occur on Sunday, April 20th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Patuxent’s North Tract entrance. Activities will include educational programs and work projects. Please join us for these events."
