2008 Wild Turkey Hunt Success Stories
Patuxent Research Refuge partnered with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Wheelin’ Sportsmen and Meade Natural Heritage Association (MNHA) to offer a wild turkey hunt this past Spring (April 12th through May 19th). The Refuge offered this hunt to youth, disabled, mobility-impaired and general public hunters. This year there were approximately 48 hunters and four turkeys were taken. Two of the lucky hunters are Kasey and Matt.
Kasey's Turkey
Kasey's turkey was taken on Saturday, April 26th at approximately 11:30AM at the North Tract. Kasey is an 11 year old who has a very busy life which includes soccer, dance, girl scouts and the occasional hunting or fishing trip. Kasey was guided by Mr. Gene Hyatt of the Wild Turkey Federation. Kasey’s turkey was six years old and weighed 20 lbs with a 12 inch beard. The spurs were worn down to 1 ¼ in. The bird was almost as big as Kasey! They didn't know who was more excited - Kasey, her Dad or Gene. Kasey will never forget her first bird. Many thanks to Gene Hyatt and the volunteers at Meade Natural Heritage Association. It is people like Gene that keep our traditions living on.

Matt's Turkey
Matt’s turkey was taken on Monday, May 5th at approximately 7:30AM by the Boy Scout camping area at the North Tract. His friend Chris Wilder guided Matt helping him to call the turkeys. Matt had his choice of two Toms that morning in the field. The turkey weighed 18lbs 7 oz, 11” beard, and 1 ¼” white spurs. This was Matt’s first turkey although he has hunted waterfowl for the last 15 years. Matt was so excited that him and Chris even shared a “man-hug” after the shot. Matt is Meade Natural Heritage Association’s Vice President and Waterfowl Coordinator. |
