Visiting the Patuxent Research Refuge

There are several options for leaders wishing to bring their scout groups to Patuxent Research Refuge.

If leaders are interested in working on accomplishing badge criteria, a copy of "Program Links" can be picked up or mailed prior to their visit. Program Links is a publication that describes how leaders can utilize the exhibits and trails at the National Wildlife Visitor Center to help their scouts meet some of the nature related badge requirements.

We recommend that Scout Leaders attend an "Orientation Workshop" to the National Wildlife Visitor Center. This workshop will familiarize them with the exhibits, and they will learn what materials are available for groups and how to use them. In addition, they will receive a curriculum package that they can use on their group visit.

Periodically, the Refuge offers staff-led workshops (See current schedule) for upper level scouts that focus on specific badges. Workshops will be listed either on the Refuge website or offered through the local Boy Scout or Girl Scout Councils.

The North Tract entrance of the Refuge offers camping to scouts and 4-H groups mid-March through the end of June. Camp sites are for primitive camping - use of tents only! Please contact North Tract at 301/776-3090 for more information.
