Purpose: These volunteers foster the growth and development
of the volunteer arm of the Refuge.
Duties: Volunteer mentors will attend orientation sessions
and periodically follow up with new volunteers. Volunteer Orientation
Leaders and Trainers provide courses for other volunteers to enhance
their volunteer experience on the Refuge. Duties may also include
assisting with volunteer recruitment, record keeping scheduling, preparation
for volunteer events, and volunteer recognition.
Location of Assignment: NWVC or Visitor Contact Station.
Qualifications: Extraordinary people skills, flexibility,
dependability, and an interest in volunteerism and volunteer management
are required. Good organization and record keeping skills also needed.
Computer experience very helpful.
Minimum Age Requirement: 16.
Training Provided/Required: NWVC site orientation (2 hours)
and two 4 hour shifts at the Information Desk with a seasoned volunteer,
Customer Service Training (2 hours), and On-the-job training during
regular shifts will be required. Attendance at all Refuge training
is suggested. Defensive Driving Course will be required if a government
vehicle is used. Volunteer Management Volunteers will be required
to contribute 50 hours of time prior to being assigned as a Volunteer
Mentor, Orientation Leader, or Trainer.
Time Commitment: For Orientation Leaders, Trainers, and Mentors,
at least 4 classes per year. For others, 2 scheduled 4- hour shifts
per month, Monday through Friday.
