Purpose: These volunteers enhance visitor outdoor experiences
on the trails and public use areas by greeting visitors, providing
information, and insuring public safety.
Duties: Assist visitors on trails and other public areas of
the refuge; answer questions regarding policies and nature interpretation;
report problems and emergencies; maintain trails for visitor safety.
Location of Assignment: North Tract trail monitors will sign
in at the North Tract Visitor Contact Station prior to going out on
the trails at North Tract.
Qualifications: Good interpersonal skills. Ability to walk
or bike for several miles at a time in a variety of weather conditions.
Minimum Age Requirement:18 (however, 14 year olds are permitted
if working with a trained parent or guardian each time they volunteer).
Training Provided/Required: Refuge Orientation (6
hours), Customer Service on-the-job training (8 hours), NT Trail Monitor
Training (2 hours), NWVC Trail Monitor Training (5 hours plus self-study)
highly suggested.
Time Commitment: Must work at least 4 hours per month. Hours
of operation vary seasonally.
Related Issues: Incidents of lyme disease have occurred as
a result of working in the field. Volunteers should be aware of the
risk and measures to take to avoid tick bites.
