Purpose: These volunteers enhance the visitors tour experience
through an interpretation of the National Wildlife Refuge System,
refuge management, wildlife research and wildlife encountered along
the way.
Duties: Volunteers lead tram tours on the NWVC grounds. Interpreters
present information on the Refuge system, Refuge management, wildlife
research, and interpret wildlife they encounter along the way. Responsible
for assisting the driver in insuring the safety of tram passengers.
Location of Assignment: National Wildlife Visitor Center grounds.
Qualifications: Good people skills required. Must enjoy talking to
people and sharing their knowledge about the natural environment.
Minimum Age Requirement: 16.
Training Provided/Required: Refuge Orientation (6
hours), Customer Service on-the-job training (8 hours), Ecological
Concepts Training (6 hours), Interpretive Techniques Training (6 hours),
Tram Interpreter Training (2 hours), self -study and certification
by a staff member are required.
Time Commitment: During the tram tour season (mid March -
mid November), volunteers must commit to at least 2 tram tours per
month in Spring and Fall, and 4 tram tours per month June through
August.
Related Issues: Incidents of lyme disease have occurred on
Refuge as a result of working in the field. Volunteers should be aware
of the risks and measures to take to avoid tick bites.
