Purpose: By tending to the construction and maintenance needs
of the property, these volunteers provide a safe and enjoyable outdoor
experience for both visitors and wildlife.
Duties: Volunteers construct and maintain trails, build and
install gates, mount and install signs, cut fallen trees, stain and
paint, maintain vehicles, mows grass, and other general maintenance
as required. Occasional supervision of work groups for a specific
project may be needed.
Location of Assignment: Refuge grounds.
Qualifications: Experience in general maintenance and hand
and power tools is required. Must be in good physical condition and
possess a valid State Driver’s License. Must have the ability to hard,
physical labor in all types of environments and weather. The ability
to supervise groups is a plus.
Minimum Age Requirement: 16 (however, 14 year olds are permitted
if working with a trained parent or guardian each time they volunteer).
Training Provided/Required: Refuge Orientation (6
hours), Customer Service on-the-job training (8 hours). Defensive
Driving Course is required if a government vehicle will be driven.
Proper training and supervision is required if power tools will be
used.
Time Commitment: For NWVC general maintenance, two 4-hour
shifts per month, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. For NT, must
be able to work one 4 hour shift on scheduled work days (3rd Sunday
of the month). For assistance in work project supervision, weekends
(in general) are needed.
Related Issues: Incidents of lyme disease have occurred on
the Refuge due to field work. Volunteers should be aware of the risks
and measures to take to avoid insect and animal bites.
