Purpose: These volunteers provide habitat for native wildlife
species, specifically birds and insects and improve the "presentation"
of the facility.
Duties: Volunteers help maintain the landscaped areas of the
Refuge. Possible activities include mowing, weeding, watering, edging,
pruning, and cleaning interpretive panels.
Location of Assignment: Refuge grounds.
Qualifications: Knowledge of gardening is required. Ability
to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, and the ability
to kneel, squat, and lift moderately heavy materials are required.
Minimum Age Requirement: 16 (however, 12 year olds are permitted
if working with a trained parent or guardian each time they volunteer).
Training Provided/Required: Refuge Orientation (6
hours), Customer Service on-the-job training (8 hours). If power tools
will be used, proper training and supervision is mandatory. Defensive
Driving may be required if a government vehicle will be driven.
Time Commitment: One 4-hour shift per month Spring through
Fall.
Related Issues: Incidents of lyme disease have occurred on
the Refuge as a result of working in the field. Volunteers should
be aware of the risks and measures to take to avoid insect and animal
bites.
