Bald eagles are no longer protected under the federal Endangered Species Act. Therefore, section 7 consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is no longer necessary. However, bald eagles remain protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. To help landowners, land managers, and others meet the intent of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, the Service prepared National Bald Eagle Management Guidelines.

The bald eagle also continues to receive protection as a State-listed threatened species in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
